The West London School of Dance was founded in 1986
by Anna du Boisson.

The purpose of the school is to teach different forms of dance and to provide students with the opportunity to perform in professionally staged productions. The school offers classes for boys and girls from the ages
2 ½ - 17 yrs, and scholarships are available. From the age 8 years old the school will now be auditioning children for entry in to the school.

Anna trained at Rambert Ballet School, going on to dance as a soloist for 15 years in major ballet companies. She has been teaching internationally for over 20 years and is a former rehearsal director of Ballet Rambert.

The philosophy of Anna and her teachers is to inspire in their pupil’s a love of music, movement and freedom of expression through dance. The skills gained through the encouragement and discipline in the classroom can be applied to all aspects of their life beyond. The school encourages children to find inner strength and will to achieve their best in any  situation.

The classes are highly professional, all accompanied by pianists and taught by qualified staff. Unlike other ballet schools in London, the school l does not follow exam syllabi to measure progress. The school offers its students the challenge of performance rather than a certificate by exam. The school works with children from a wide range of abilities including some behavioural and learning difficulties.

Classes are held after school hours and at weekends to enable students to continue their normal academic education while preparing for a possible career in the arts. Past students have gone on to train professionally with schools including The Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School, Elmhurst Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Rambert, London Studio Centre, Tring, and the National Ballet of Canada.

A large number of students also attend weekly classes at The Royal Ballet School on the associate programs. Other pupils continue to professions in theatre productions, set design, lighting or musical theatre. Countless others have happy memories of productions and take with them a greater self-confidence and poise for their future life.

The production company offers staged performances. These alternate between traditional ballets and specially arranged musicals. The productions give children an invaluable opportunity to perform on stage under professional conditions in front of a live audience. This develops confidence and a love of the theatre, which is the aim of The West London School of Dance.

The school’s committee - Friends of West London Dance is a registered charity, which helps in raising money for the scholarships. As school costs soar, it becomes increasingly vital that places are kept available for those that might not afford it otherwise.
